Awareness and Advocacy is a basic need for the Psycho-social uplift of a society. SF has observed and addressed the need among disabled individuals due to their disability through certain awareness campaigns, counseling sessions and one-o-one meetings. SF has raised awareness among Persons with disabilities regarding their disability acceptance; better, self employed and independent life. The impact of these sessions has resulted as many individuals associated with SF are now having their own resources which are not only helping sustain their lives but they are actively leading or helping their families both with financial and social support.

Disabled people face discrimination and marginalization across the globe. They are affected by extreme poverty and due to this; they have limited livelihood opportunities. Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) overlooked the responsibility to include disabled people into their mainstream program. Microfinance is supposed to be for poverty reduction, empowerment of poor and vulnerable people but very few examples shows that microfinance served disabled people. To help persons with disabilities become financially stable, robust, and self-sufficient, Safia Foundation takes the initiative of micro financing for persons with disabilities of Sialkot.

Challenges

Description

Way forward

1

Acceptance

One of the obstacles during field activities was acceptance of SF’s staff and their effort among community. Families of disabled individuals were not even welcoming at first to receive the help. Acceptance of having a disable person in families is no less than a trouble for them

One approach to eradicate this barrier is to raise awareness among PWD individuals and family members through highlighting the organization’s vision and mission. Seminars or campaigns would be one possible solution to it

2

Attitude Barrier

Due to unawareness and lack of understanding, attitude of community towards SF was another major hurdle. People found it awkward for a woman who is disable herself to initiate an organization with the idea to aware and empower people like her in society

Awareness raising and counseling is a possible solution to this problem

3

Financial Challenges

This was indeed another challenge in itself. Due to limited or less financial resources, many areas of interest have left untreated e.g. Awareness sessions, follow up visits, individual counseling programs, sustainability programs etc. This challenge has lead to certain other challenges

An increase in financial assistance would be helpful to meet all the targets that left untreated for more and better outcomes

4

Human Resource

Among many others, one of the major challenges SF has been facing is lack of human resource. Due to limited finances, recruitment of staff is hindered which is a major need of the organization. Various tasks had been influenced due to lack of human resource for assistance is tasks

An increase in financial assistance would be helpful to arrange and manage required human resource to achieve the desired target

5

Physical Accessibility

Due to lack of financial resources, physical accessibility to remote areas was a serious issue. Absence of vehicle along with absence of human resource had been a serious barrier in reaching the target population

More financial assistance would be helpful to eliminate all these barriers and to reach all lacking commodities related to low budget
